The trap of overbuilding before PMF

The trap of overbuilding before PMF

Here’s a situation many early-stage Enterprise SaaS founders run into.

You’ve conducted extensive market discovery, built out a substantive initial product, and have put it in the hands of a few early paying customers. Existing customers seem happy with it.

Yet, the surge in customer base you anticipated isn’t happening. Prospects like your product, and some ask you about additional features and functionality. But signing each additional customer seems to involve hand combat. In other words, you haven’t hit real Product-Market Fit (PMF) yet.

It’s tempting, at this point, to fall into the trap of focusing on building ‘more.’ More features, more product variations, more integrations — anything that seems critical to signing the next big prospect that you’ve been in conversations with.

But beware, product bloat leads to:
❌ Complicated onboarding and user experiences
❌ More complex sales and support
❌ Reduced agility in product and organizational changes

The addition of each feature or functionality must therefore be carefully weighed at this stage. Is it essential to making your product work as intended for a large set of target customers?

Before expanding your product, consider:
👉 Sharpening your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP): Target those with pressing needs who’ll overlook imperfections
👉 Expanding your funnel: Attract more prospects within this defined ICP, qualifying aggressively for budget, authority, and urgency
👉 Seeking lower friction channels
👉 Refining your messaging, pricing, and positioning
👉 Sharpening your sales motion

As an early-stage founder, you need to play the role of the ultimate product manager and sales/Go-To-Market manager simultaneously and balance the interplay across those. Stay lean and focused. Only add what’s truly essential, and master selling what you have before building more.
